Or just keep your money and enjoy an otherwise free experience that’s every bit as challenging and rewarding as the original. You can pay to unlock enhancements or purchase in-game currency to stock up on power-ups and use them to blow through every level. You can spend $5 in this iPhone and iPad game to advance from ancient Egypt to the pirate seas. A fresh harvest of flora unlocks as the game progresses, and the zombies evolve to match. The plants can shoot peas, toss corn and unleash other agricultural attacks to defend against hordes of comical, undead creatures shambling in from the right.

Players use their fingertips to tap and harvest drops of sunlight, which are the currency needed to plant unusually combative crops on the left side of the screen. The action unfolds on a static playing field: this time, a stretch of ancient Egyptian desert, the deck of a pirate ship or somewhere in the Wild West. Zombies 2: It’s About Time is the same as the original’s. Rated 9+ (Players 9 and older) for mild or infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence

The Puppeteer stars Kutaro, who wields a pair of scissors. Boats sometimes pinwheel on the spot, as if their captains were drunk. The enemy might cluster outside cities and not engage the player’s forces. Computer-controlled armies take too long to make their moves, and, worse, their artificial intelligence is poor. The campaign map has run at comically low, stuttering frame rates. Much of the good work, though, is undone by some surprising issues. No game can capture the clash of thousands of tiny soldiers better than this one. You even get little generals giving little speeches before the battles. Maps have a greater variety they’re larger and feel more “alive” (less like arenas). Let’s start with the good parts of this epic computer strategy game, which allows you to command legions of historically accurate soldiers in battles across ancient Rome. Rome II is what happens when a game’s good parts are undermined by the technology holding them up. Rated T (Teen) for alcohol reference, language, suggestive themes and violence It’s not really a cartoon, though it looks like a beautifully painted one. Perhaps it’s a good song on the radio, though it requires some effort of its audience. What’s the right metaphor for this game, which plays so sweetly but doesn’t linger long? Maybe cotton candy, though it feels more substantial. At worst, like a record, it will skip as you struggle, and then you quickly get through it and play on. It can be tough, but failure and death - the fall into a bottomless pit or the collision with a spiky barricade - is just a finger-snap away from a restart at a nearby checkpoint. To play well, you glide through the game, which is not to say that Rayman Legends is a breeze. It’s an unusually good-looking one, whose hand-drawn style, like that of its 2011 predecessor, Rayman Origins, allows it to look like a cartoon brought to interactive life.

Like so many Rayman and Super Mario games before it, Rayman Legends is a side-scroller: players control a hero who must run from screen left to screen right. Rated E10+ (Players 10 and older) for cartoon violence and comic mischief
